There's an aristocratic air at the Hotel Ritz Madrid, where my daughter and I felt like royalty on a recent visit. This baroque, palace-like outpost (part of the Orient-Express Hotels, Trains & Cruises collection) occupies an enviable location near Retiro Park and the Prado and Thyssen Museums. Our Belle Epoque-style room was a delight, outfitted with a handwoven carpet and embroidered linen sheets. Don't miss Goya Restaurant, the place to see and be seen - and to dine on scrumptious modern seasonal Spanish cuisine (the Sunday brunch is fabulous).

The Ritz Hotel is situated in the heart of Madrid near Retiro Park and overlooking the Stock Exchange Building and The Prado and Thyssen museums. Within walking distance of some of the capital's finest stores. The Botanical Gardens, The Reina Sofia modern art museum and the Zarzuela theatre. Barajas Airport is 15 km. away (25 minute drive).

The hotel has 167 guestrooms including junior suites, deluxe suites and the Royal Suite. All rooms are equipped with air-conditioning, individually decorated, hand-woven carpets, antique furnishings, fine wood panelled closets, embroidered linens, carefully chosen paintings, working desk, direct dial telephone, modem and fax hook-up, mini-bar, radio and satellite color television with remote control. They all have 220 and 110 volt electricity supply and adapters. The fifth floor is reserved for no-smoking guests. Each bathroom is finished in marble, decorated with refined gold taps and equipped with a heated towel rail, hairdryer, bathroom scales, luxurious designer bath products, telephone, bathrobe and shaving mirrors.

Dining facilities include the Goya Restaurant and Summer Terrace, an award winning restaurant overlooking the hotel's attractive terrace and garden and is famous for the beauty of its ancient tapestries. Velazquez Bar and Bar Jardin Ritz, 24-hour room service and Ritz Royal Service which is a catering service with refined table linen and silver cutlery, tailored exclusively to client's needs.

Additional facilities include the Fitness Centre located on the 6th floor. The Fitness Centre is equipped with treadmills, step machines, rowing machines, stationary bicycles and free weights. Access is complimentary for guests. Sauna, massage, sunbed and facials can also be enjoyed for an additional charge. There is also a Business Centre, Concierge, Beauty Salon and five meeting rooms for functions of all types.
