The hotel originally belonged to the noble "Sasso" family. An important member of this family was the Brother Gerardo founder of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. Richard Wagner penned part of the Parsifal here more than a century ago in 1880. In the 1950s, Roberto Rossellini and Ingrid Bergmann stayed at the property on numerous occasions. By the 1970s, a feud among the owners had forced the legendary hotel to close–until now.

Palazzo Sasso has been recently restored to luxurious standards retaining many of its original Mediaeval and Baroque features. Most of the furniture is from the 18th and 19th century.
