Palazzo Sasso, an elegant hilltop hotel created with style and panache from a 12th century villa, is the newest, and one of the most desirable places to stay on the breathtaking Amalfi Coast. The hotel sits on the cliffs some 1,000 feet above the surrounding coastline in the charming medieval village of Ravello. Originally built in the 12th century and tastefully refurbished to deluxe standards, this authentic, architectural masterpiece offers 43 air-conditioned bedrooms and suites, most of which have exclusive Jacuzzi baths and unique sea views. The hotel originally belonged to the noble "Sasso" family. An important member of this family was the Brother Gerardo founder of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. Richard Wagner penned part of the Parsifal here more than a century ago in 1880. In the 1950s, Roberto Rossellini and Ingrid Bergmann stayed at the property on numerous occasions. By the 1970s, a feud among the owners had forced the legendary hotel to close–until now. Palazzo Sasso has been recently restored to luxurious standards retaining many of its original Mediaeval and Baroque features. Most of the furniture is from the 18th and 19th century. Today Palazzo Sasso is frequented by the famous such as Placido Domingo who was the very first guest at the hotel as well as Gore Vidal, the noted American author who now resides in Ravello and is a regular guest at Rossellinis, the hotel's fine dining restaurant. The rooftop features a magnificent sun terrace with hydromassage plunge pools, and a new outdoor swimming pool. Several panoramic terraces, the fashionable lobby bar and cozy library serve an array of delicious snacks and "fresh pasta dishes", refreshments and sophisticated cocktails. Dining at Palazzo Sasso is an unforgettable experience–sampling the best in Italian Haute cuisine and Italian wines with an impeccable and attentive service. A large selection of fine cigars is on offer at the hotel. The famous summer music festival in Ravello, sight-seeing and memorable boat trips to Positano and Capri, tennis, horse riding and hiking, along with the nearby beaches and charming encounters with the local people, all add to the ambiance of the prestigious Palazzo Sasso. |
