Castello del Nero Hotel & Spa was just the right spot for our honeymoon. Offering access to both Florence and Siena and a peaceful setting in a twelfth-century castle, the hotel boasted the best of both worlds. Admittedly, I spent more time in the spa than sightseeing, but who can resist the area's first destination spa, designed by ESPA (especially when full-day spa rituals are available). Our suite was divine, with its original fresco, vaulted ceilings and impressive fireplace. When it's time to get out and explore, take advantage of the daily shuttle service to and from Florence.

Each of our 50 rooms and suites has breathtaking views of the estates olive groves and vineyards, inhabited by pheasant, deer and wild boar. Each different in layout, style and decor, our rooms feature slanted, wooden beamed ceilings, 'cotto' floors and bathrooms decorated with marble and mosaics. The majority of our rooms and suites feature double beds with the latest in mattress technology. Light goose down duvets, soft bed linens and cashmere blankets make for restful and comfortable sleep. Modern, in-room entertainment includes LCD televisions as well as video and music on demand. A high speed internet connection is available and all rooms have powerful hairdryers, mini-bars and safety deposit boxes. For guests who want to enjoy the original features added by skillful painters and stonemasons several hundred years ago, 18 unique suites are available.
